How To Create The Perfect Farmhouse Holiday Bedroom
Holiday decor ideas are easy to come by when you're styling the living room or dining room. These spaces lend themselves well to the season, with trees, lights, fireplaces and dining tables creating a natural centre and focus to build from.
But when it comes to the bedroom, it's all a little more subtle. Rather than just putting up the traditional and generic decorations, we like to go for an overall vibe of winter, farmhouse-chic romance. From mixing textiles to making it personal, here are our 5 tips to creating the perfect farmhouse holiday bedroom...
RUFFLED LINEN
Organic textiles are a year-round go-to for us, with fabrics like linen (obviously) and burlap always creating a perfectly rustic, shabby chic, modern farmhouse style. But the holiday season is when these textiles can really shine!
Ruffled linen being our style of choice, adds a subtle touch of country, cottage style, and always makes us feel cozy. It's like a warm hug on a cozy day, it's like home. For us, all great bedrooms begin with the softest, most lived-in bedding.
POP OF COLOR
It's the holiday season, so we like to start with a white base. Creating a wintery white farmhouse bedroom starting with linen bedding and pillows, and then adding a few neutral features (like rugs, stools, curtains).
Once you've got your snowy background, it's time to make it pop! Add bright red or buffalo plaid throw blankets and decorative chair pillows. Paint an old lamp green and gold for the season. Or even add light blue lights for a frozen haven of comfort and joy. The craftier, or more DIY, the more farmhouse holiday feel.
EVERGREEN EVERYTHING
And the more green, the better! Once you've added your statement colour pieces to the room, it's time to go green. From boxwood wreaths and garland, to spider plants and evergreens, bring it all inside the bedroom.
It's winter, and the tradition of decorating with evergreen and year-round foliage is an ancient, worldwide farmhouse tradition. One that still holds power over our basic holiday trends today. And we are so on board for it. The more boxwood, the merrier!
SCENTS & SMELLS
This one is something we often find missing when we discuss our farmhouse bedroom decor. While a picture is worth a thousand words, and a million emotions, it doesn't give us the true, full ambience of a space. But talk to us about smells, music, sounds - these all add to a true farmhouse holiday feeling, especially when decorating the bedroom.
In our own home, we like to experiment with scents. We want our farmhouse holiday bedroom to be our sanctuary, not only to relax mentally and physically, but also to reflect on each moment the season brings. From pine and evergreens, to vanilla and cinnamon, bring it in the bedroom with scented candles and potpourri.
MAKE IT PERSONAL
This is our number one rule when it comes to any farmhouse decor. We like to make our bedroom a winter haven, but we want it to feel as meaningful as possible during the holidays. The cherries on top of our farmhouse bedroom decor are the personal touches.
A quilt hand-stitched by grandma, an old favourite stuffed animal, your children's first handmade holiday drawings, or hand-me-down pillowcases that stay in the family. These are all items (for us) that really make the space.
Find something that's important to you, and put it on display during this year. Perhaps something you've forgotten about or haven't seen in years. Tis the season for remembering those you love, your memories and all you have to be grateful for! xx
